Intel® Workstation Processors

Intel® Workstation Processors
How quickly can you change complex data into actionable information? With quad-core workstations based on new hafnium-infused 45nm Intel® Core™ microarchitecture, workstation users are experiencing the unprecedented performance to blaze through iterations while rapidly transforming their imagination into reality.

Data Center Efficiency

Data center efficiency is critical to business needs as computer requirements grow, density increases, and power and cooling demands climb. Intel is helping the industry address areas where data centers consume power including power conversion and distribution, cooling, and even lighting.
To do this, Intel is focusing on data center performance metrics and improving energy efficiency at the processor, platform, and data center levels.
Developing better performance metrics
In collaboration with industry standards organizations such as the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) and The Green Grid, Intel is helping to develop a more reliable metric that measures energy consumption and performance for all levels of utilization-idle to peak-that a server would experience in a typical day, week or month. Developing more reliable industry-accepted metrics will give server manufacturers:
Better guidelines for designing energy efficient servers
Better ways to demonstrate energy efficiency to customers
Fairer product comparisons for competition on the basis of energy efficiency

Intel® Turbo Boost Technology

Intel® Turbo Boost Technology Performance on demand
Intel® Turbo Boost Technology is one of the many exciting new features that Intel has built into latest-generation Intel® microarchitecture (codenamed Nehalem). It automatically allows processor cores to run faster than the base operating frequency if it's operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits.Dynamically increasing performance
As an independent and complimentary feature, Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology (Intel® HT Technology) along with Intel Turbo Boost Technology increases performance of both multi-threaded and single threaded workloads. Intel Turbo Boost Technology is activated when the Operating System (OS) requests the highest processor performance state (P0).
The maximum frequency of Intel® Turbo Boost Technology is dependent on the number of active cores. The amount of time the processor spends in the Intel Turbo Boost Technology state depends on the workload and operating environment, providing the performance you need, when and where you need it.
Any of the following can set the upper limit of Intel Turbo Boost Technology on a given workload:
Number of active cores
Estimated current consumption
Estimated power consumption
Processor temperature
When the processor is operating below these limits and the user's workload demands additional performance, the processor frequency will dynamically increase by 133 MHz on short and regular intervals until the upper limit is met or the maximum possible upside for the number of active cores is reached. Conversely, when any of the limits are reached or exceeded, the processor frequency will automatically decrease by 133 MHz until the processor is again operating within its limits.

Intel® Virtualization Technology

Helping to transform IT environments, hardware-assisted Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT)¹ provides greater flexibility and maximum system utilization by consolidating multiple environments into a single server, workstation, or PC. With fewer systems required for the same tasks, Intel VT delivers:
Simplified resource management increasing IT efficiency.
Greater systems reliability and availability reducing corporate risk and real-time losses from downtime.
Lower hardware acquisition costs with increased utilization of the machines you already have.Making traditional virtualization better
With support from the processor, chipset, BIOS, and enabling software, Intel VT improves traditional software-based virtualization.¹ Taking advantage of offloading workloads to system hardware, these integrated features enable virtualization software to provide more streamlined software stacks and "near native" performance characteristics.

BlackBerry Application Suite coming to S60, too?

BlackBerry Application Suite is the ghost of the RIM world, making an occasional appearance as a fuzzy leaked pic -- but to the chagrin of WinMo and BlackBerry fanatics the world over, never actually getting announced or released. Boy Genius Report claims to have more details on what exactly BAS is and how (and where) it's going to work, and for the most part, it's a depressing read -- only the Touch Pro, Fuze, and TyTN will be compatible initially and it's only running BlackBerry OS 4.2 -- but there is one bright spot: Symbian compatibility. Presumably, this means S60 devices will have a crack at the package, and seriously, can you imagine this action humming along on an E71? Sorry, Curve 8900, but your title of "hottest BlackBerry" is in serious danger here.

Remember that alleged Microsoft MyPhone beta page that popped up on getskybox.com yesterday? It's back up now and being hosted under the company's official domain, with everything apparently intact except that tantalizing "Sign In" button. According to a statement from the gang at Redmond, a limited invite-only beta is in the cards, and more details on the syncing service formerly known as SkyBox are coming to Mobile World Congress later this month. As for the beta itself, the wording's a bit ambiguous here -- will we just be getting new details on the trial or will the signup actually launch then? Looks like we'll find out for sure in just over a week.

Intel reportedly planning new lower-cost processor for ultra-thin laptops

Intel may be looking at bringing its Atom processor to some non-netbook laptops, but it looks like it's also planning to venture into some slightly more profitable territory, with CNET reporting that the company is on track to release a new Core-architecture processor for ultra-thin laptops later this year. That processor would apparently be priced well above the low-cost Atom, but below the likes of the Core 2 Duo "S" processor used in current ultra-thin laptops like the MacBook Air and Voodoo Envy 133. Unfortunately, Intel doesn't seem to be quite ready to get much more specific than that, with it only saying that the processor could be used in laptops that are less than one inch thick, and that the processor itself would measure just 22 x 22-millimeters. As CNET points out, that pretty much places the processor squarely in competition with AMD's new Athlon Neo, which is also going after that same, presumably more profitable middle ground.

FC-LGA4 Package Type

The FC-LGA4 package is used with Pentium® 4 processors designed for the LGA775 socket. FC-LGA4 is short for Flip Chip Land Grid Array 4. FC (Flip Chip) means that the processor die is on top of the substrate on the opposite side from the LAND contacts. LGA (LAND Grid Array) refers to how the processor die is attached to the substrate. The number 4 stands for the revision number of the package. This package consists of a processor core mounted on a substrate land-carrier. An integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) is attached to the package substrate and core and serves as the mating surface for the processor component thermal solution such as a heatsink. You may also see references to processors in the 775-LAND package. This refers to the number of contacts that the new package contains that interface with the LGA775 socket. The pictures below include the LAND Slide Cover (LSC). This black cover protects the processor contacts from damage and contamination and should be retained and placed on the processor whenever it is removed from the LGA775 socket.

Intel® Core™2 and Core™ Duo and Solo processor families

Letter prefixes indicate a processor class. This is based on a range of power or performance, under which each particular processor's specific power level or performance type resides. Example: a 31W Intel® Core™ Duo processor uses a "T" prefix because 31W falls between 25W and 49W and is therefore a highly energy-efficient processor.
